5This is one of the best
By adead_poet@hotmail.com
I've found that The Texas Review is a great literary magazine. It has fiction, essays, reviews, and poetry. I've found that it's prose section--the fiction and essays--is a little weak, especially compared to what is out there. The reviews tend to be good. Where it really shines is in the poetry contained within. And no surprise there, after all, Robert Phillips (of U of Houston) is the poetry editor. Not only is he a great poet, but he has exquisite taste in poetry. And he is highly respected by many contemporary poets, and as a result, The Texas Review gets submissions it might not otherwise get. I think he is what really makes the magazine.

The Texas Review is one of our top literary (read: poetry) journals. It doesn't have the clout that Poetry or The Hudson Review has (but then they are the two best out there), but it isn't all that far behind the large nationals. In Texas there is no higher achievement than appearing in The Texas Review, and as a regional journal, it is one of the best. In fact, for a regional magazine, it is highly respected and well-known. Just look at the heavyweight poets found in the current issue (Fall/Winter 2002): Dave Mason, Walt McDonald, Karl Shapiro, Maxine Kumin, Robert Mezey, and Frederick Morgan. And in the past they've had work from R.S. Gwynn, Robert Fink, X.J. Kennedy, and Clay Reynolds.

Everything being said, The Texas Review is a great literary magazine. And while we can't subscribe to every literary journal out there, Texas Review is a good one to put on your subscription list. You'll find some of the best poetry being written within.

5Surprising Quality-- especially the poetry
By A Customer
Briefly: the Texas Review literary journal should have more exposure than I assume it does. As a teacher of literature and self-titled connoisseur of literary magazines (check out Ploughshares, Prairie Schooner, and The Georgia Review for some "big" names), I find much of the poetry published today simply boring. In the Spring/Summer 2003 edition of TR, two poems stunned me with their brevity and originality: Kathleen Aguero's "Cassandra Mama" and William Wright's "Dreaming of My Parents"-- the former was formalistically sound and beautifully realized, and the latter, simply heart-rending. I was also enamored of Paul Perry's imagistically twisting and breathless "Longford, the Wind." I look forward to reading more of this magazine.
