3Simply not what it used to be...
By M
I started reading this magazine in the early 90's, when I was a kid. My dad had a few from the 60's and 70's, and I have expanded my collection since then to include a good amount from the 80's. That stuff was brilliant.Artists and writers die, we know that. New artists and writers can be good, but the MAD magazine of the 2000's isn't worth buying. Why did MAD start putting in ads? Wasn't it making enough money by itself? I loved MAD for the fact that it was ad-free, and the brilliant writing and artwork, laced with biting satire. Now, the humor in there is more of the "potty humor" level, and is the kind of thing juveniles laugh over. Now it's not worth the paper it's printed on, and CRACKED magazine has gone the same way and already ended publication several years ago. Last time I read a MAD magazine, I found myself completely bored and impatient with it, and wondering how such a great magazine could have become so lackluster.

4Mostly a blast from the past
By R. Brandon Felts
The magazine is hyper liberal which I am but honestly I keep politics and humor in two different parts of my brain. I still love it though. My only grip is they ship in no protection other than a light paper cover so the magazine usually looks awful after going through the mail system. For the cost they charge they should at least be in a plastic bag like every other magazine.

MAD magazine is the most intelligent magazine I offer my students! It increases their cultural literacy and teaches them irony, sarcasm, and wit.

4A peer and compliment to American Record Guide
By Larry VanDeSande
Coming in the same size and on the same six times a year production schedule as its peer, American Record Guide, Fanfare magazine gives American classical music buyers another perspective on new releases. It also provides interviews with musicians and others in the industry, another complement to ARG's coverage of musical America.Calling itself the magazine for serious record collectors, Fanfare's reviews are almost always longer than ARG's. Some people think the reviews tell them more; sometimes they do and sometimes they tell you more about the reviewer. It's a certainty that, with at least some Fanfare reviewers, the lengthy reviews are more about the reviewer than the music under discussion.I think there are a number of things this magazine does well and I would say those things are these:1. As a subscriber, you gain access to Fanfare's electronic warehouse of reviews going back to the 1980s. This is the most outstanding benefit since more than half of all "new" classical music releases are re-releases of music that's been recorded and released previously. And since only about 1 percent of new releases are an improvement on existing recordings, the ability to go back in time and see what else is out there -- which is what made the Penguin Guide famous -- is critical to collectors making sound purchasing judgments.2. Fanfare gives its critics all the space they need for their reviews. This can -- when the critic is incisive and direct -- result in a penetrating and searching review. When one of the lesser writers is at work, it is kindly to say the literary concepts of directness and conciseness are abandoned. These reviews tend to become personal observatins and not subjective reports on the product.3. Fanfare uses an unusual format in its opening pages that merge interviews with reviews of spotlighted recordings. This provides more in-depth coverage and opinion on these pieces -- usually including lengthy direct quotes from the composer or playre -- than any other publication provides. Not everything at Fanfare is plum pudding and there are equal and corresponding negative aspects to this magazine. They include:1. Long-winded reviewers with an agenda and, sometimes, little to say about the music. Some reviewers write about the CD in the first and last paragraph and expound on their musical knowledge (or their opinions) everywhere else. Even one of their own critics once published an epistle on how to write a review, saying many reviews seemingly act like liner notes for the music.2. They publish a lot of letters, which is a positive and a big improvement over ARG. However, in the letters section the reviewers are given space to respond to all criticism. This tells me their work cannot stand up to criticism and the magazine does not value reader input that varies from its expert opinion. They also publish a section where the reviewers get to critique each other. For me, this is no help whatsoever and little more than a personal bashing ground.3. Fanfare's wide one column format can be difficult for the eye to follow and may exhast the reader. Going to a two column format, like that used by ARG, would improve matters and allow the magazine to put more text into fewer pages since you get more text on the page in multiple columns than in a single column.Another plaudit -- the writing used to be pretty bad in this magazine, with flowery prose regularly substituted for informatio. I am pleased to say this has improved over the years. One reason for this, I think, is that -- unlike ARG, which recruits its reviewers from universities and the musical establishment -- Fanfare often recruits its reviewers from its subscription base. While a number of its critics are famous, long term music writers, a surprising number are self-taught in the art of music and/or music criticism and/or have been community practitioners. However, in the comparison with American Record Guide, my assessment is that ARG employs some of the best music critics in the USA and Fanfare, for the most part, does not. I consistently find ARG's best reviewers include more reference recordings in their comparative reviews than Fanfare, even though Fanfare's reviews are sometimes twice as long. Also, much of Fanfare's "front end" product -- the interviews with performers and recording company executives that runs through the first 100 pages of each issue -- paves the way for the plentiful pages of color advertising in the magazine. Stated another way, it is the crossover from a critical guide to one that is in bed with the music industry. Advertising pays the freight, I know, and there is a price to pay for that -- one ARG will not pay.Another plaudit, especially for the Fanfare editor, is his habit of offering more than one review of an item. I once read two reviews of the Dohnanyi violin concertos that followed back to back. They could not have been more different; one praised the recording to the skies, the second recommended other recordings of both pieces. Because some of Fanfare's critics simply overdo it with enthusiasm a bit too often, in my view, this editorial device is very helpful for me.As subscriber to both Fanfare and ARG, I find each has merit and complements the other. Each is published six times annually and they arrive at my house about the same time. Both are also available online to subscribers. I often read one, then refer to the other for elucidation. Fanfare making available its database or reviews going back to 1989 to subscribers is a big advantage over ARG, which does nothing of the sort and, instead, suggests subscribers keep all their old copies and refer to them when they want to know something. In this way, Fanfare is in the 21st century and ARG is in the 20th century. While no critical journal is perfect, I don't think there is any question Fanfare has moved ahead of the British magazine Gramophone, whose level of criticism has declined, its level of poor writing has increased, and it has put more emphasis on world musical development and download technology than reviewing music available to readers. I would recommend this magazine over Gramophone for anyone wanting recommendations on new recordings.

4For the Electric Guitarist
By Milarepa
I've been a subscriber for some time now and I find this magazine to be a great bargain. This magazine/CD combo is a must for the electric guitarist. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that there is too much emphasis on metal for my taste.

3Recycled article
By apken
Is any one frustrated by the fact they paid good money to buy Guitar World magazine only to experience, in this case, the dreaded sense of Deja vu? Future Publishing is presenting as new, previously published articles again. I am referring to the trio of Pink Floyd articles that appeared in the Nov 2010 issue of GW. Wouldn't it piss you off to remember you read the same articles the previous year in another magazine. If you weren't aware, the illustration on pg47 was originally presented as the cover of last year's Classic Rock magazine Vol.139 2009 also by Future Publishing. Incidentally a better cover as it was in the form of Hi-def Lenticular cover! Let's see:- The title of the Article was changed from "Tear Down The Wall" to "Legends of The Wall"- Introductions, the same...- Credited to Glenn Povey, Illustrations by Magictorch, check- Bob Ezrin Interview by Jaan Uhelszki, representing Classic Rock now reworded/edited to represent GW especially the questions but the Erzin responses were repeated verbatim.- The title of the Kevin Murphy article was originally presented as "Behind the Wall", now reads Triumph of The Wall." Detailing Alan Parkers experience making the movie, the article was again recycled verbatim.- Classic Rock magazine went a step further and did a roundup w/ 21 different of rockstars Dio, Portnoy , Wakeman etc.and got them to share their favorite Pink Floyd experience. GW was too busy patting themselves on the back for lifting the first 3 articles.First, while the articles were informative, they were more appropriate to and better presented in a magazine detailing the Rock Experience such as Rolling Stone, Spin or Classic Rock magazine. Actual guitar related content was minimal.Second, I am certain the excuse will be related to country of origins, Classic Rock mag being more widely sold in Europe but if you can read english, have access to Barnes and Noble, Border Books etc. or even a computer you can buy CR Magazine anywhere in the USA. This is the very point of concern when Future Publishing bought out Guitar One and Guitar World. These 2 magazine coexisted for decades and still published original material alongside GFPM, Guitar School and Guitar Player. Why does Future Publishing have the right to repeatedly present year old material as current and original? The magazines should conspicuously note re published articles and offer subscribers additional content or just offer original material!apken

I love "GUITAR WORLD"! For all those haters that gave it less than 5 stars, what do you want? THEY just started an AMAZING digital issue and have always set out to respect all styles of guitar playing. EVERY issue is a pleasure to read and they continue to bring in new and exciting articles every month. If a magazine ONLY wrote what YOU wanted it to, how would you be exposed to different styles and tastes. Guitar players are guitar players and WE ALL learn from each other.ROCK ON GUITAR WORLD!Jason[...]

3All The Text, None Of The Illustrations
By Brandon Ross
I love The Atlantic, so I was ecstatic when I saw it on the Kindle list.Overall, I'm disappointed. All the text is there, but no illustrations, graphics, or charts. One of my favorite sections is Primary Sources, filled with interesting charts and maps. For some reason, NONE of these make it to the Kindle. Nothing but text. I guess it sounds immature to say, "where are all the pictures!?" But I certainly miss them, and the content is not the same without them. But again, it is nice to have some form of The Atlantic available. I hope the illustrations are eventually included.

3Incomplete?
By Catherine Michael
Since I don't get the paper edition anymore, I've been wondering how complete the Kindle edition is. I didn't really expect graphics, since most other Kindle periodicals don't have them or leave most of them out, but I was shocked when the latest issue of Atlantic in the Kindle edition had a list of the contents of the Election Special, but not the Special itself. Bummer.

5Best Magazine on the Newsstand
By Matthew Vanhouten
Under the supreme tutelage of Editor Lewis Lapham, Harper's Magazine consistently churns out intense, dramatic, sincere, frightening, uplifting, and challenging commentary. If others in the media censor their opinions in the face of big brother, Harper's makes up for it with brutally honest assessments of culture, politics, and world affairs.

At first look, Harper's seems a leftist publication, but if you read it a little more carefully, it's a lot more Mark Twain than Karl Marx. I'd call it centrist, but even that implies straddling the center between two extremes. Like Twain, Harper's is more of a somewhat irascible, yet always caring voice on the outside, not on one end of the spectrum or another, but rather on a different spectrum altogether.

The attitude is egalitarian, never pompous. The voices are reasonable, if sometimes angry or alarmed. Harper's is definitely not a liberal magazine in the sense of Marxist socialism. Harper's is liberal in the sense of Jeffersonian liberalism. It's opinions seem more focused on improving local cultures and economies and challenging the demagogues and central planners who seek to control the masses, be they Democrat or Republican. Perhaps Harper's is the Jim Jeffords of the magazine world.

Harper's is an eloquent and impassioned magazine that delivers carefully constructed and inventive views of the world each month. There is an overriding sense of seriousness and genuine compassion found in every issue. In a world where so many media sources are merely parrots for a larger corporate or political agendas, Harper's stands out as an autonomous voice of indignant opposition to censorship and blind nationalism. If you care about the world we all inhabit and genuinely want to discover how we might all get to a better place, give Harper's a read. It may not provide the answers, but it certainly raises all the right questions.

5what's not to like?!?
By Benjamin K. Potter
Here's a quick breakdown:

1. Harpers will feed your need for the trivial. The Index is a fascinating collection of facts and figures, and the front-of-book section is probably one of the most quirky, laugh-out-loud funny and stimulating in the business.

2. Great fiction. Some up-and-comers submit, along with some old pros (a recent story by Joyce Carol Oates was outstanding)

3. Great features. Some great topics, albeit a lot of environmental stuff, it's still well-rounded and well-informed. Great ones I've read recently include a look at maids, SUVs, education reform and more.

I can see why people might not like this magazine because it appears to be "uppity." In fact, the only thing that annoys me about this magazine is the letters to the editor, where all of the Ivy-league intellectuals write in and try to prove how smart they are. But I think the appeal is more widespread than that. And you'll be paying less than a dollar an issue -- you'll definitely get your money's worth.

5Possibly the greatest literary periodical in existence
By Macro Micro
I finally received a subscription to this amazing magazine as a gift, and I've read my first issue cover-to-cover over the span of two days. This month's (February 2003) issue includes, among other things, an essay on the inevitable doom that humans will eventually face when our planet experiences its next major cosmic collision.. Unless, of course, we manage to annihilate ourselves via environmental, militaristic, pathological, or technological means, pre-empting the arbitrary extinction caused by an asteroid or comet.

Every issue of Harper's contains excellent essays, fiction, political discussion, and of course the Harper's staples, such as the Index. Many of the stories and essays win major literary prizes such as the O'Henry award, and get included in high-profile anthologies such as the *Best American* series. Certainly, for a writer, if you are chosen to appear in Harper's, you are at the pinnacle of your craft.

Although the New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, and many other smaller literary magazines consistantly offer excellent content and visually pleasing formats, Harper's seems to lead the pack -- maybe because of it's no-nonsense approach, limited advertising, regionally non-specific content, and diversity of topics. The fact that Harper's is aided by a non-profit organization must contribute to its quality; certainly any independence from advertisers can only improve the open-endedness and creativity that Harper's excels in.

2Shallow and Maxim-esque, Esquire is bloated with ads
By Jared Castle
The cover on my last issue featured Sofia Vergara in Agent Provocateur's black lingerie - and I still didn't bother to renew my subscription. It was too little, too late for a magazine that initially drew my interest as I smarter alternative to Maxim and a more coffee-table friendly alternative to Playboy. Alas, after a one-year subscription, Esquire failed to capture me.I purchased my Esquire subscription with the same expectations I had for GQ, magazines known more for their abundant advertisements and cologne samples than for an unique, interesting take on men's interests. Esquire pushes well beyond my limits. The April 2012 edition (my last) makes a perfect example. The table of contents appears on page 25; advertisements packed between it and the cover:BvlgariGiorgio ArmaniErmenegildo ZegnaDolce & GabbanaCalvin KleinWoodford ReserveLincs DC & CoNewport Beach Film FestivalHugo BossLuminoxMoontower Comedy & Oddity FestBuickThat's 24 pages of advertisements before you reach the first editorial copy. And if you think that's an unfair representation, let me share that the next 20 pages includes ads for JC Penny, Tommy Hilfiger, Triumph, Canali, Salvatore Ferragamo, Ford, Breitling, Hickey Freeman, Gucci and Citibank. Within the next 20 pages, there are two more pages thinly spread with a table of contents, a staff listing, and only four pages of content, one of which carries the staff listing jump. So, in the first 45 pages of Esquire, there are less than four pages of actual content.Only one article, "Miracle" by Craig Davidson, was of the quality that I'd come to expect from Esquire. The nine-page piece (two pages serve as bloated title art) explores the medical advancements of synthetic hormones to delay age-related conditions. The Sofia Vergara cover garners two thumbs up from me. However, only three more pictures of her appear in the magazine. Three! That's reason enough to fire an editor, maybe a couple. I can only take so many pictures of shaggy, bearded, brooding men hawking shoes, watches and cologne. If you are going to put Sofia Vergara on the cover, at least have the decency to treat your readers to a longer layout, at least a half dozen pages. What's left is a choppy, increasingly juvenile collection of short articles and humor that illustrates how much Maxim and the other Laddies infected the entire men's magazine industry. The April 2012 edition included these one-page, puddle skippers:Levi's made and craftedMad Men's fifth seasonNew books by Stephen King and John GrishamHow picky are sperm banks?Keyboard shortcuts we needIn summary, Esquire is at the 1977 Elvis stage of life. I look back on the old issues with the same fondness I once held for Men's Health, Playboy and GQ. For a magazine approaching its 80th anniversary, Esquire needs some of those synthetic hormones to ward off its bloated visage and marked decline in quality features. Someone forgot being entertaining and smart are not mutually exclusive. Simply, today's Esquire is shallow and Maxim-esque.Rating: Two stars.

575 years old now, and still going strong
By John Williamson
In their memorable October 2008 issue, Esquire celebrated their 75th anniversary. To commemorate the event they published an experimental limited-edition of the issue that featured something called electronic ink, with moving words and flashing images. My copy wasn't one of the lucky ones, but it was proof that this venerable publication wasn't behind the times. This had been a magazine that I had previously bought the occasional issue to read in airport terminals while traveling, or in lobbies while waiting to keep an appointment. Had often thought about subscribing, but for one reason or another hadn't done it. I subscribed during one of those opportunities here on Amazon when the price was too good to pass up, and am glad that I did.The magazine: their 200-page December 2008 issue had the expected plethora of ads, but also had some excellent recipes for chili, of all things, along with an amazingly creative gift guide. There was an interesting article about how Jaguar had been sold by Ford to India's Tata Motors and the effect that it would have on that carmaker. The issue also celebrated the innovators who are leading the way to a better world for all of us.The March 2009 issue listed the top fifty songs that we should be listening to, and the diversity of their choices was surprising. No spoilers here; just look it up, even online, as they have a great Web presence to compliment their written articles. They offered suggestions on how we could create and maintain a better, greener environment, not just in a philosophical sense but with some innovative product suggestions as well. From that article I now know about Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap, a 100% organic product that has been around since WW II. We learn something new every day.I have no problem with their ads, as here in this digital age they contribute to keeping the cost of this publication down. Their articles are tight and concise, often filled with more humor than one might expect from a magazine that's been around for so long.Check the deals here. It's as good as it was in your father's or grandfather's day, only far more up to date... and actually even better.

5Best MEN's magazine out there
By A regular guy
I first picked up a copy of Esquire a few years back at an airport, read it cover to cover to the flight, and haven't looked back since. It is a great magazine for men who are past the frat boy humor stage of their lives and are looking for something with more substance. The magazine's writers are top notch and regular segments like Answer Fella, Funny* Joke From A Beautiful Woman, and a sex column written by Stacy Grenrock Woods are always fun to read. The magazine regularly contains interesting articles on cocktails and recipes, restaurants and bars, movies and entertainment, sports and US and world news. And of course interviews with gorgeous and intelligent women, including a highly creative interview of Halle Berry by Tom Chiarella where Miss Berry writes the article and Mr. Chiarella annotates it. This is just one example of Esquire's creative approach to journalism. Sure, The Sexiest Woman Alive (where the woman so annointed is revealed piece by piece in different issues) may be tired (and to some, sexist), and some of the writing gets a little too tongue-in-cheek at times, but I have not yet found another men's magazine for which I would pay for a subscription.

1Oprah / Hearst invoicing scam? Or lousy business practices?
By Vancouver couple
I've purchased a lot of products on Amazon and have subscribed to Oprah's magazine for many years. I have read a lot of negative comments about Oprah's auto-renewal process over the years, so I have always intentionally purchased the one-time, one- or two-year subscription terms on Amazon, making certain not to select the auto-renewal options. And I have purchased this magazine as a gift for others multiple times too. I've never had a problem with the magazine, the subscriptions, the invoicing, or the delivery...until now. In December, 2010, I purchased another 2-year term subscription to 'O, The Oprah Magazine' for my wife, same as I'd done in prior years. I paid for it with my American Express. The rate was $24.00 for two years. With (WA state) sales tax, it came up to $25.85 and showed up on my January statement, which was paid in full. The subscription is paid up through January, 2013. After a few months, I started receiving renewal notices for a one-year ($18.00 per year) subscription, directly from the Oprah publisher. This is something that the Oprah magazine or their publisher has done frequently over the years, so I just ignored the renewal notices, as I've always done (seems kind of a waste of resources to solicit people who aren't scheduled to renew for another 20 months...but, if that's the way they want to run their business, whatever). Obviously, I wasn't interested in renewing again, so I recycled the solicitations. By the way, the renewal solicitation did show the 2013 expiration date right on the document, so I knew it wasn't for a prior iteration of the subscription. Yesterday I received a collection notice from Sunrise Credit Services, Inc. for an account balance of $18.00. Yes, you read that right. They have forwarded my account to a collection agency for the non-payment of a subscription solicitation! FOR AN UNPAID SOLICITATION, not for an actual subscription or for something that I actually ordered! Amazing, but true. Either the Oprah magazine and Hearst (the publisher) have exceptionally poor records / databases, or they're running some kind of little scam that they hope enough people will fall for that it will more than pay for the cost of all those renewal solicitations they send out. Whatever the case may be, I have to say, Oprah and Hearst, that I'm extremely disappointed in your business practices. Now I'll be wasting more time responding back to Sunrise Credit Services with all the details and trying to get them off my back. Irritated doesn't even begin to cover what I feel about your business and the fact that you've unnecessarily put this collection company on my credit history. All for a measly little $18.00 and because of your inability to keep proper records...or because of a poor attempt at a subscription scam. And if it goes beyond that, I'll be forwarding this to the office of the Washington State Attorney General. Come on, Oprah and Hearst, why don't you spend a tiny portion of your multi-billion dollar profits on updating your records and I.T. systems, so people don't have to write horrible reviews like this? By the way, this is the first review of any kind that I've written on any site, but I felt compelled to do so, so that others may avoid going through the same nonsense or, at least, be aware of what's potentially going on when they start seeing those renewal notices start showing up in their mail. It's a good magazine and quite often a good price through Amazon; just horrifically inept business practices on the part of the publisher. What an absolutely unnecessary waste of my time and other peoples' time reading things like this when you could just as easily clean up and refine your subscription systems and databases.

1Dishonest Subscription Renewal Process
By MC
I purchased a one year subscription online last year for both myself and my mom for the Oprah magazine. I paid online for both at the time of purchase and have an email to prove it. Now that the subscription is expiring, my mom and I both have gotten at least 3 threatening letters each. Each is entitled "INVOICING BUREAU" in red. The letter states " when you entered into an agreement to be billed later, we believed you would send your renewal payment upon receipt of you invoice. Now that your subscription is coming to an end, we still have not received your payment. You can resolve this matter quickly by returning the subscription invoice with your payment in the enclosed envelope." This letter does not include a phone number and uses a lot of red to emphasize how urgent it is to pay. It is purposefully misleading, I never led on that I wanted to renew. I went to the website and there is no way to contact them, by email, etc. after a lot of searching, I did find the cancel my subscription button.

1Do NOT accept the $5 special price
By Bead Maker
Last night, I ordered O as a gift for my mother. When I went to check out, I saw there was a special price of $5.This morning, I see I was charged FOUR time at the $5 rate. Called customer service, and the rep said there is nothing they can do... can't cancel, and he couldn't even explain to me how it happened. So now, I don't know if I'm getting four copies of the magazine, or if I paid more than full price for the mag.The customer service rep said if I get four copies, I can bundle them up and send them back to Amazon for a refund... but this is a gift. Not really the way I wanted my mom's birthday to go.I'm not sure if this is an Amazon glitch or something from the publisher, but I'm not happy about my experience with O magazine so far.

3GQ has lost its way.....
By A. G. Corwin
GQ has undergone a major transformation in the last several years from a sophisticated men's magazine geared towards professional, intelligent men to a magazine that attempts to stay relevant in a world where Maxim and FHM dominate. The writing has gotten progressively worse, although Alan Richman remains as good as always on food and wine. The photography is nowhere near the quality of a Vanity Fair, and I for one have enough magazines that have bikini clad women arrayed seductively on the front. I don't need more Jessica Simpson. (caveat: Jessica Alba cover was amazing). I subscribed to GQ because it was different from the rest. Now it looks and feels somewhat trashy. Though there are the occasional great articles, for me, Esquire is a much better magazine overall. I even subscribe to Vanity Fair which seems more appealing these days. Barring any major improvements in the next 5 months, I will let that subscription lapse.

3Losing the right to the word 'Gentlemen'
By FrKurt Messick
I started reading GQ back in the mid-1980s. I was an undergraduate male, intent upon a political career in London. Thus, I felt GQ was a useful magazine to keep me up-to-date on the latest styles of dress, in addition to the occasional useful article on other topics of fashion, some sports, some travel, some pop culture -- after all, I was trying to be a 'happening' guy, and my social class and schooling (all conservative to the extreme, which in the big 80's was not out of place, but not cutting edge either) didn't give me all I needed to know.

Since those days (and since radical shifts in the direction of my vocation), I have used GQ less and less. Then, about a year ago, I got one of those buy-magazines-and-win-millions offers (no, I didn't win), and one of the few magazines that held any interest to me in this particular list was GQ. So, I thought, a few dollars, and I'll get a magazine I like.

Well, not quite.

GQ is very different today than I remembered. For one thing, only one of the past many issues I've received has seemed something I would want arriving at my home (as I am now a priestly sort) -- apparently, in order to stand out in the men's magazine world, GQ feels it necessary to put an almost-naked woman on ever cover in some sultry pose. Now, fair enough, this is appealing to men, but an examination of issues ten years ago will show this was not the cover feature back then (usually it was a man on the cover, either a well-known person from sports or entertainment, or someone showing a fashion style). The April 2000 issue is more what I was used to -- it has on the cover Nomar Garciaparra, Alex Rodriguez, and Derek Jeter. Of course, the headline has to appeal to the prurient interest, reading that they play shortstop as well as play the field. Included on the cover are stories about 'Alaska's Wild, Wild Women', an anonymous story entitled 'My Mentor, My Rapist', and a story about a new 'trend' of men becoming voluntary castrati. EEK!

This is certainly not the magazine I remember. I don't remember being titillated by GQ of the 80s (sure, there were advertisements that are always destined to have some sexual content, subtle and not-so-subtle), but GQ today is trying hard to compete with the almost (or maybe not almost) soft-core magazines such as Maxim. But I have found that I find very little of interest to actually read in GQ, and I am not so interested in the fashions or the sexual content any longer, so, I have come to the decision that GQ is no longer a magazine for me. And there seems to have been an explosion of advertisements -- so many, in fact, that it is hard to find the actual content of the magazine apart from the advertisements. Considering the number of advertisements (which, I must confess, all seem the same to me, and I'm an old PR guy, who used to teach advertising!), GQ should be paying me to look at the magazine!

And, I'm sure, GQ doesn't expect it to be. While in many demographic respects I am exactly who they are targeting (a 30-something, white, educated male), it no longer fits my lifestyle, which has taken a different direction from 'popular' culture. GQ has a strong audience, but alas, it is no longer the magazine for me.

Pass me 'The Economist', will you?

5Postives Far Outweigh Negatives
By D
GQ presents a difficult paradox of a magazine. There are many reasons to dislike GQ: Its pretentiousness, the focus on unobtainable clothing, the holier-than-thou writing.

But, there are so many positives about GQ that a subscription is not only recommended, it is almost required. First, and perhaps foremost, Alan Richman's food/restaurant columns. Second, Peter Bart (the once-deposed editor of Variety) writes a great Hollywood column. Third, GQ is far and away superior to its rivals, which I believe are Esquire and, somewhat surprisingly, Vanity Fair.

Fourth, the fashion features and celebrity interviews are beyond compare. Finally, GQ generally has one article a month that I would describe as investigative journalism, and these articles can't be missed.

All in all, GQ is an essential for any magazine rack.
