It's all about the music

I've been buying guitar magazines since 1990 and have a collection of hundreds of them. This one is the best! It has always been good, but these days I think it stands out from the crowd even more. I've seen magazines start out good, full of useful information and sheet music, then plunge to the depths of crappy industry gossip and little else. These guys have kept a strong loyalty to the musicians who wanna play, rather than the ones who care about image and nothing much else.Guitar Techniques gives you a really wide variety of styles to learn. So if you're into metal, country, jazz, folk, or whatever, I've seen it covered. They have regular workshops on beginner tips and advanced soloing techniques. Nothing escapes these guys. They also cover different artists all the time. So if you want to learn the latest song by The Darkness, or Jeff Beck, or Hendrix, or whatever the latest metal band on the scene is playing, then it will eventually turn up here.It's common for them to delve deeply into a particular person's playing style as well. In that case, you'll get a whole chapter of the mag on, say, "Diamond" Darryl and how he gets his sound, followed with examples of how he plays and in which songs he employs special techniques or scales.The sheet music itself is comprehensive and easy to follow. Not only that, but this mag comes with a CD each month so that you can pick up things by ear. They also include 'Jam Tracks' that allow you to play along with tabbed songs adding in your own guitar lines.Plus, of course, the have all the regular magazine stuff: letters to the editor, equipment reviews, album reviews, artist news, and so on. But the bulk of the magazine is taken up with things you can get your fingers into right away.I highly recommend this magazine subscription to anyone who is wanting to take their guitar playing to a greater level; it has something for everyone at all levels.Good luck with your playing.

A modular music library

Most guitar magazines seem to be heavy on discussion of artists but light on actual music. GT still talks about artist's styles, but then gives you the tab and standard notation for one of their works or a class on how to solo in their style. A standard issue contains sections like rock, jazz, acoustic fingerstyle, Funk and country, followed by workshops on (for eg.) using altered tunings, increasing fretting speed, and other interesting things.

The accompanying CD gives multiple examples for each piece or exercise, usually with tracks played at different speeds and/or and example track and a backing track to play with.

The only downside to this magazine is that you hardly have time to work on eveything you wanted to before the next issue comes out.

the CD makes the difference

Covering a broad spectrum of music styles, all the music included in the magazine is played on the CD. Even better, all the music is included twice- first with the guitar, then without it for you to play along with. There are usually one or two songs from well known albums transcribed in each issue, as well as columns in many different styles of music. It may seem expensive, but with the CD its very reasonable. No American guitar magazine comes with a CD and to get the audio tracks you end up paying a lot more to download them from the Internet. Believe me, hearing the music on the CD makes the difference.

That is, why pay to have it delivered when you can get it for free online at www.cardplayer.com. All the articles minus the full page ads. Plus all the archived issues back to March 30, 2001 (as of December 5, 2003). If you insist on getting the "paper" issues, you can still subscribe to the paper magazine at their website for less than what you'll get here.

That said, the magazine/website itself is definately worth 5 stars. It is more complete that any other poker-oriented magazine or website that I've seen.

Card Player Magazine - for people who play to win!

CPM is distributed for free in many card-rooms and casinos. Because of that more than half of the pages are full-page ads for gaming equiptment, for poker-tournaments and for card-rooms, brick & mortar as well as internet-based. If you (like I) live too far away to pick Card Player up for free twice a month it's a treat to have your copy brought to your mailbox. I've been an avid reader of CPM for many years, a subscriber for close to one year, and I'm a big fan.

All issues contains articles covering poker-strategy, low and medium stakes ring games and tournaments, reportage from big poker-tournaments, and legislative, judicical and taxation-related info. The articles are mostly written by professional poker-players from CPM's roster, including some of the most successful tournament players. It's not unusual to see the same tournament, sometimes even the same hand being analyzed and discussed by different players, each from their own perspective.

Articles on the psychology of poker, on common mistakes or misconceptions by players, and of course on the World Poker Tour all add up to make the magazine not only fun reading, but also a precious learning-tool for the aspiring poker-champion as well as the interested home-game amateur.

... instead of buying a subscription you should go to www.cardplayer.com and see all the articles of any of their magazines up to and including the newest edition. Then if you feel so inspired to get print copies, it'll be alot cheaper to get it from the CardPlayer.com site.The forum at the site has alot of good info too. You don't have to be a member to read from the forum. Good Luck!

Is it even a magazine?

I feel like the word "magazine" nominally cheapens the value of The Believer, for it is nothing like what I've come to know as a magazine. What do I mean?

1. There are no advertisements, at all2. There are almost no photographs, although there are many drawings3. The story topics are seemingly disparate, yet each tends to relate itself somehow to literature4. The cover and pages are quality paper and binding, not some flimsy, glossy mess bound with a few staples

Without a doubt, this is my favorite periodical. Each article is stimulating in its own right, even if the topic itself is not interesting.

Pretension, thy name is Believer.

Yep, pretension is the name of game here. Although it's not really pretension - its a kind of uber-pretense, a pretension so pretensive in its self-mockery that it somehow doubles back itself and actually becomes almost worthwhile.Almost.The cutesiness of the verbal ticks (each article, for example, is prefaced with a distinctly unnecessary list of issues which will be "discussed")are so studious in their avoidance of any level of seriousness as to be nearly embarassing. The quality of writing is, as one might imagine, mixed. The book reviews are hilariously unimformative, and yet again one suspects this is done on purpose. How gauche do we readers need to be to want to find out what a book is about from a review! Or whether not the book is worth reading! How pedestrian! Pul-ease!All in all one walks away with the distinct impression that to spend more than 5 minutes in conversation with the Believer (or the McSweeny's) crowd would be an unavoidable prelude to a grisly murder-suicide. Simultaneously brilliant and annoying, The Believer is the sort of thing that people who like this sort of thing will certain like. And even then in small doses, I suspect.

Future Music

This magazine is invaluable for the present-day producer.I produce hip hop tracks and find that this particular magazine is tailored perfectly to the producer who works much with virtual instruments, plug-ins and the like.Each month's issue also comes with a bonus CD that includes plug-in demos (often free fully-functional plugins), tutorial videos, sound samples, etc. This, for me, puts "Future Music" in a different league than other magazines.Mags like Mix and EQ are great - covering a wider scope of music and music-for-film production, but for the producer working with a Digital Audio Workstation, "Future Music" is probably the best "get right down to business" audio magazine available.Highly Recommended.

UK edition of the magazine...

The earlier reviewer commenting on the price is referring to the US edition of the magazine, which is about $20 per year, and is no where near as well put together. This is a great magazine, I had the subscription for it and bought it in pounds and got the bill once it had been converted to dollars, needless to say I only did it for one year. It's still less than buying it at the newsstand which is around $16 per issue I think. If you like to get new audio samples, tutorials, plugins and virtual instruments every month, this is "the" magazine to get, if you like that stuff but don't want to pay the charge for having it sent over the pond, consider the US version, but realize they are not the same and the US one is not nearly as good.

Better Watch Out!

I sent in a card for a preview issue and never recieved it. Since then I've been bombarded with with forceful Must Pay notices. They've now turned me over to a collection agency. I've not to this day subscribed.
