A Great Magazine For The Music Enthusiast

Goldmine is a music magazine that caters to record collectors. The cover stories and articles deal with all types of music (rock, r & b, pop, country, jazz, reggae, punk, alternative, etc.) with the greatest emphasis on artists who were popular in the '60s and '70s. Recent cover stories include interviews with surviving members of the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, AC/DC, the Four Seasons, and the Dave Clark 5's lead singer Mike Smith. There are also annual issues devoted to Elvis Presley and the Beatles.

Each issue of Goldmine contains reviews on recent cd releases (new product and reissues/collections). There are also country and jazz sections that contain interviews with vintage artists (recent country interviews include Bobby Bare, Guy Clark, and Merle Haggard) and cd reviews. The country section also provides helpful info like upcoming tv appearance and cd release dates, while the jazz section offers esoteric essays from jazz historian Carlo Wolff. Dahl's Digs is one of my favorite columns, where celebrated author Bill Dahl (Motown: The Golden Years) "digs" up some rare musical treasures from the past that have been recently reissued (or should be).

Since Goldmine is a magazine for record collectors, there are a number of ads by vendors who carry rare/promo vinyl and cds, as well as a classified section where you can state what you're looking for (I have bought some rare radio promo collections this way). If you like a lot of genres of music, especially music recorded during the '50s through the '80s, then I think you will enjoy Goldmine.

Intelligent Musical Guide

Finally, A musical magazine that is not mired down in sophmoric humor for stoned college kids. One that actually focuses on the integrity of music for its reviews, delves into the deep history of artists and their albums with great research. It does weigh a bit heavy on music pre 1980 but that is to be expected due to the age of most of the writers. A great resource for those who are collectors of vinyl, and cds; although they could use more information of what is collectible and give more prices in each edition. While you won't get those glossy photos of jessica simpson barely clothed, you will enjoy insightful writing on the music and career of musicians both popular and obscure. I highly reccomend this for music lovers.

I've been collecting vinyls for 6 years now. I only recently discovered this magazine and subscribed imediately. There are a lot of great infor about artists of all kinds, record collecting and venues for finding them. The front page always has a frame worthy photo. It is a great added addition to a fun hobby.

Fresher, broader, and more visual than Wallpaper, ID

Having been an avid reader of ID magazine first, I was stunned to see a magazine like 'Wallpaper' that is more dedicated to the actual products than the industry. ID magazine just always left me wishing 1) there was more pictures of actual products and 2) I didn't just spend THAT much money on each issue. I loved Wallpaper. But then I was introduced to 'Surface'. Surface's features are more design-oriented. You get a sense that the editors hand-picked the products for their innovation, sculptural form, and the desire to expose the readers to designs ranging from fashion to architecture to product. It's more obvious that Surface goes to great lengths to make the whole issue cohesive; a general theme is carried from one article to the next. On the other hand, Wallpaper--while a very good addition to Surface--seems more like a monthly "collection" of interesting design products and buildings sent in by reporters around the globe. Wallpaper has its own advantages, however, and it's that it always strives to get things from around the world, not just Europe or the U.S. In fact, it features more Asian design than Surface does and has special issues like Wallpaper Navigator--sort of a guide to the design-minded world traveler. (You'd be surprised at the level of sophistication of current Asian design.) Nevertheless, each issue of Surface is simply more special, more professionally executed, and while I pick up Wallpaper all the time, Surface is the magazine I subscribe to.In the end, ID magazine is like a 'Guide to Downtown Eating' for professional industrial designers; Wallpaper is the "buffet" of the three with its product section, architecture section, and world section; Surface is, fittingly, the well DESIGNED three-course dinner with its appetizer, entree, and dessert all complementing each other.

Very informative magazine that scrutinizes a wide variety of political topics and current affairs, from American homeland to the remotest jungles abroad, all with their own unique perspective and viewpoint that runs moderate to left.

The writing and topics are engaging, current, and well researched and the editors not afraid to call things as they see fit.

Put down the Cosmo for later, and read a few articles you won't find on the TV mainstream news. after all.. knowlege is power.

If you are looking for an informative monthly on the left In These Times (ITT) offers thought-provoking commentary and articles that are pithy but not skimpy (a characteristic I sometimes find of the weekly The Nation).Most importantly, ITT reports on labor every issue, an important component of the left, that is often neglected by other magazines of the left.In These Times is a magazine that may be harder to find in a library. If you are interested, I suggest first visiting their website which allows you to read portions of the current magazine without paying anything.The price for the magazine is very reasonable, and I personally find the magazine content more diverse and interesting than The Progressive.

Unfortunately, becoming more of the same

The first issue of Concho River Review I purchased (at Brazos Bookstore, Houston) was a mixture between the same old "avantgarde, creative" stuff and a few insightful pieces. The latest issue, Volume XX, is a total disaster: it's entirely the kind of machine-stamped, workshop-generated, topicless, "unique" in setting but mindless in execution, trendy garbage. There is nothing of literary value here although the poem "Lapse" is amusing. I hope Concho River Review gets off the MFA trip it is on and resumes printing material that is actually critical of the assumptions we make, conveys learning instead of emotional sure bets, and has something at all to say, because right now this is a wasteland of zero value.

Better for beginners but OK for everyone

Listen -- Life With Classical Music is one of the newer magazines covering classical music and probably the newest magazine covering it in USA/North America. It started modestly a few years ago and has grown to such extent the curent issue (June 2012 or "summer") is 96 pages. The magazine is published quarterly in a full-size (8 1/2 by 11 inch) format on high quality pulp paper as opposed to slick glossy pages. I did not find a webpage listing in the magazine and assume it does not have one.Compared to other magazines of its type, I'd say Listen tries to be more like Gramophone or BBC Music Magazine insofar as it is full of color advertising, photos and personality pieces. The summer 2012 issue contained only a four-page "Recommended" section that deals with brief reviews of recorded music. The rest of the pages are dedicated to advertising, pieces on performers, composers, their music or musical venues. In no way does Listen compare to review-heavy magazines like American Record Guide or Fanfare; it is definitely long on glitz and, in my mind, short on substance and content.That's not to say I dislike the magazine. I recieved it first on a freebie basis, then subscribed for a couple years because of the low subscription price and on the chance it would become more substantial as time went on. One definite advantage is Listen is an easy read, sometimes with fairly interesting content like a story an issue or two back about one-hit wonder Hans Rott, whose Symphony in E inspired Gustav Mahler. The current issue has stories on types of dances, dance at the Guggenheim, Ute Lemper and Profofiev's Cinderella, among others.I think it is improving in terms of comprehensive content but I am disappointed it does not review more new or reissued recordings. From the looks of things, reviews of recordings are an afterthought for Listen. This seems unusual to me since just about any new website or magazine can acquire lots of free new releases from manufacturers by asking. They can receive more by telling the distributors they will give them good reviews.As an American that's followed classical music and the classical music press for four decades that first subscribed to High Fidelity and Stereo Review, I'd like to liken Listen to them but it's not in the same category, at least not yet. Listen seems more most dedicated to acquiring color advertising and publishing content aimed at beginners. I don't discount that, especially the advertising, as it is an effective way to show readers about new releases. With sound bytes of new recordings available all over the web, it's important for any publication to tell us about new offerings since we can find the rest ourselves.To me, Listen: Life With Classical Music is best suited to young people or others new or recent to classical music. Most veteran collectors, performers, musicians and followers won't find much new in it. But the price you'll pay for a subscription -- 2 years (8 isuses) for less than $15 in the blow-in card in the summer issue) -- is unbeatable. I don't know what you last bought new for $2 but it probably wasn't a classical music magazine.

Excellent magazine for classical music fans.

I have been a subscriber for the last two years and I must say the magazine is first rate. The interviews are great. Top notch artists have been interviewed (Anne Sophie Mutter, Joshua Bell, Yo Yo Ma etc). The writing is quite good and the magazine is laid out very well. The font size, print quality and reviews are very good.I like ArkivMusic's 'Listen' all the more because it is published here in America and gives me information on upcoming shows in the US. I agree with another reviewer and wish that this was published more frequently than just four times a year. An excellent value for any classical music fan.

The problem is too much to read

I have enjoyed this publication for several years... Another reviewer here denigrates the quality of articles and poetry BUT in fact as with any poetry publication, there are writings that will appeal to you and stuff that you will dislike completely. After all, few fields are as filled with differing tastes and styles as poetry (I can't imagine a poetry publication where all poems are of universal appeal). The essays and articles will either be of interest to you or not. I usually find a few that are well worth the reading time and some that are excellent and others that are memorable. CAUTION: this is not a mass market publication. It can be demanding (after all, even a single poem can take time to read and re-read) and I rarely manage to find time to read the entire issue before the next one is available. RECOMMENDATION: Ignore the negative review... find a copy, read it and decide for yourself.

The poems and articles in this magazine do demand more time and a background in writing and literature to fully appreciate them.This reviewer says that he has been reading American Poetry for years, and says the poetry is usually awful and the writers are terrible. I question why he would continue to read the publication for years if he finds it so inferior to other literary magazines. Most people have a limited amount of time and would not continue to give so many chances to writing that has failed them so frequently. If I had not already been a reader and fan of APR, that alone would tempt me to read it. What is it that has pulled him back to it for years????Edit this post Permalink

I know APR is supposed to be one of the better poetry magazines out there, and I think it has one of the highest circulations of any poetry magazine, but it's more of the National Enquirer of poetry magazines. It's a large, newspaper-style format that contains mostly bad poetry and dull articles. You'd be better off subscribing to Poetry, The Hudson Review, The Texas Review, Tar River Poetry, or any number of other journals.
