High Quality Content But Lackluster Fulfillment Department

I've been purchasing this high-quality magazine for the past 3 1/2 years and have been mostly thrilled with the quality of its content for the entire duration.The gear reviews are probably the best in its publication class: the gear they choose to review covers a wide range of user profiles, from boutique to beginner-oriented gear. The lessons and transcriptions cover a good balance of the musical landscape in guitar music and are very well produced. The columns on guitar and amp maintenance are so-so, and unfortunately don't go much beyond the very basics, but the occasional recording and songwriting columns are much more sophisticated.The artist features are probably the weakest part of the magazine, and take up a solid chunk of the magazine, but it's probably a necessary evil of marketing the publication. Finally, the CD/DVD reviews are idiosyncratically British and overly indulge in glowing reviews for too many mediocre modern Britpop acts and the British version of alternative rock...but then, that's part of the charm of buying a UK publication isn't it?I've enjoyed the editorial content of the magazine so much that I've been a subscriber for the past two years. Sadly, as good as the editorial content, the business side of the magazine appears to fall far short.As a consumer, probably the main thing one would care about for a publication that costs $135 annually is consistent and timely delivery. Not only does the publisher seem incapable of delivering the magazine in synch with the time it hits newsstands in the UK, but it consistently arrives later than it hits the newsstands IN THE U.S. In fact, the routine delay is about 25 days after an issue's release.Even worse, nearly half of all issues simply never arrive, which is a problem I've not encountered with the magazine's sister publications (Guitar Techniques and Total Guitar). After months of communicating with the publisher, I'm advised that this is a widespread problem that has required a change in the delivery method to attempt solving the problem. Kudos for that...however, the attempt to achieve delivery of 2 back issues that never arrived was similarly unsuccessful. Somehow, Guitarist UK issues seem to turn into vaporware when they are mailed...which would suggest that using a courier with tracking might be helpful once a problem has been clearly identified.Although it has good editorial content, the lackluster business management and fulfillment functions make this an ambivalent recommendation. The Economist manages timely delivery and it costs less. Let's hope Guitarist can pull it together, because it's editorial team deserves a competent business team backing it: 6.5 on a 10-point scale.Without the delivery problems, it would get a solid 8.0.

A very good book review journal with a much different take than the New York Review of Books (also excellent)and I particularly like have that difference in viewpoint not only from a cultural and geographical perspective but because the educational systems emphasize different things and I enjoy benefiting form that added value.

Occasional outstanding reviews marred by British chauvinist quirkiness

It seems almost sacriligeous to find fault with the TLS which for many is a kind of book-review Bible. But when compared to other book- review venues including the NY Times Bookreview and the NY Review of Books, I find it somehow chauvinistically British and narrowly focused. I also must admit to not liking the skimpy look of the journal.I base my remarks here not on one reading of one journal but on my general feeling after going through many many different editions of TLS over many years.Now I should qualify this by saying that there are of course many many outstanding reviews of outstanding books, and outstanding round- up surveys on special feature reviews. However when it comes to areas in which I have a degree of specialization, I usually find the taste of the reviewer so wide of mine that I end the reading with unease and dissatisfaction.

An absolute must for any film lover!

I just started receiving my subscription of Film Comment which i didn't even know existed till i was reading Awake in the Dark: The Best of Roger Ebert Part 7 on film criticism he states that good film criticism is commonplace and "Film Comment" itself is healthier and more widely distributed than ever before. He also makes note to Film Quarterly, Cineaste, American Film, Fangoria, and Premiere. I do subscirbe to Fangoria as well and would recommend it to any horror lover. I was receiving Premiere but was informed it is no longer in publication and they sent me Us Weekly to fulfill my subscription (no thanks)Most people have heard of Entertainment Weekly and it's a good magazine i also subscribe it's nice to see how much the movies made and some of the articles but it's more of ew polls on "Which of Carries (sex and the city) boyfriends would you like to see return? type stuff. Also it is more mainstream stuff. Film Comment is a nice way to hear about some more obscure titles or smaller movies that are worth your viewing.In the July/August issue i read a great piece on Klaus Kinski by Maitland Mcdonagh which is the reason I purchased the day after I read the article the Kinski and Herzog box set from Amazon, and it was a great worthwhile buy, I'd recommend to anybody.The magazine gives a sampling of critics ratings as Entertainment Weekly does and also includes a page of international critics as well.They also cover current mainstream and small titles at great length in their Screenings section.In there home video section they have the left and the right columns chock full of worthy titles in categories from there top 10 recommended, followed by other notable recommendations, then cult corner, avant-garde, hot docs, foreign releases, of interest, remasters and special editions, and prime time releases. In the middle in between these pillars there are insightful reviews such as there directors cut pick, editors pick, underated pick, omnibus pick, cult pick, psychotronic pick, and nostalgia pick, WHAT A SELECTION!The editors pick is Malpertuis with Orson Welles i had never heard of this obscure horror movie now I can't wait till this Tuesday for It's release.There is tons of info on movie festivals from the larger scale to the local scene.They also review and recommend books in there "in brief" section these aren't just new book reviews but book reviews relating to film, this august there reviews were from books on screen writing, Orson Welles, and one called the Cinematic.All throughout there are current, in depth, and insightful articles on anything film from the past to whats significant now.The magazine if anything will improve your overall vocabulary.The one negative with Film Comment is the amount of money you are going to want to spend on all these great titles your hearing about.Also when i ordered mine it was 40$ for the year and now it's only 25$. Twenty five bucks, that's you and your girlfriend going to the local crummy theater buying two tickets and sharing a small coke not to mention gas for one mainstream movie you probably won't like because your to annoyed by some obnoxious person who you are contemplating punching. So skip the movies this week and buy a subscription to a great film magazine which might point out a better movie at a festival with other people that like film and wont put their feet up on your chair and talk on their cell phones.Leave your thoughts, always appreciated.Thanks for reading.

Outstanding and FUN!!!

If you like themed puzzles on the harder side of the street, you will adore these. I love harder puzzles with themes and these are some of the best I have ever done. If you don't know, you should check out what the US version of the National Observer was. It was an actual publication created by the man who started the The Wall Street Journal and was in existence from 1962 to 1977. I would love to find a copy in some library on microfiche. But, I digress.There are a total of 70 crosswords in each issue and from puzzle 31-70, the puzzles are the larger, Sunday-type version. The man who edits the publication, Mr. Preston, seems to take great care because the selections are varied, delightful and enjoyable. I also like the fact that Kappa Publishing takes great care to eliminate any errors even in the headers and footers. I'm sure he has a lot of help in doing this, too. But, it's obvious, that the company cares about every detail.The books are digest-size so you could carry in your backpack, purse or other bag, which is cool for the train or something. Something I appreciate, too, is the fact that the books do not crumble after a lot of abuse in terms of falling apart from the spine. The spine is pliable because unlike any crossword magazines I've ever worked, you can open a page, move it around a bit and the book lays flat. To me, that's a great asset. The paper is akin to a slightly heavier newspaper, so your pencil or pen glides quite smoothly. I use erasable ink pens for my crosswords and the paper is awesome with these.There's not much of a discount here at Amazon for a subscription, so frankly I would plunk down the extra bucks to start getting the subscription faster. It's ridiculous to wait months when you have paid for it. Mail the coupon inside one of the books or just go to the Kappa company website and order online directly.I hope everyone enjoys solving these crosswords!

The Best Magazine for Drummers

I've been picking up DRUMHEAD on the newsstands for over a year now, and I can tell you there's no finer mag out there for the serious or aspiring drummer. The usual articles are present on technique, but this one goes beyond all of that. How about regular health and fitness articles? It's here. Equipment reviews? They've got it - and not just the major brands, but all the boutique percussion shops get press as well.Everyone gets big players and does some kind of interview. These folks actually ask the right questions. Nothing about hair, or some off-stage gossip. The interviews are focused, informative and simply some of the best I've ever seen in this type of magazine.If this is all you got, it would be plenty. But they include a CD(!) with every issue, with lessons, play-alongs and demos. Not some once-a-year trick to boost sales, every disc in each issue is useful.DRUMHEAD has done such a good job, I'm hoping someone will take the hint in other instrument fields, or that a sister publication for guitar or keyboards will sprout. In any case, if you want to live and breath drums, this won't get you signed - yeah right - but it is a fine resource for drummers in all styles and at all levels. Check it out, see if you agree.

I have not found this magazine very interesting. The writing is poor and the content is relatively unenlightening. I've received two copies and both came through the mail ripped to shreds. If you are a jazz drummer, this magazine is not much use. I'm canceling my subscription.

I have been exposed to the Singing News for going on 30 years and I am totally sold on its contributors as well as it's staff. This publication keeps fans and gospel music listeners abreast of the up and coming events, personnel changes and special needs of groups that travel around singing Southern Gospel music. I truly love the articles and pictures which bring some very popular people down to a regular persons level. By no means are they gods but they all (gospel music legends) are held in high regards. If you desire to be informed in this venue of music, this would be the magazine for you.
