Forget all of those "Boy-Metal" bands like creed or Linkin Pork...They have quality bands like Soulfly, Messhugha, Machine Head, etc... Plus great book, movie, and video game reviews...(if your into that)The only down fall is the $$ Price $$ but, you get your money's worth!

Greatest rock magazine

Kerrang! is by far the most informative rock magazine that has ever been published! I can count on Kerrang! to get the best interviews, be up to date, and get the facts straight from the mouths of the musicians. Its a hard to find magazine in the US, but if you can spare the money it is well worth your dollar if your intereseted in the world of hard rock. They also cover a wide range of bands that the US wouldn't even touch, and are always turning you on to new music with free CDs.

Absolutely brilliant magazine- shame the U.S. does not have an equivalent. Very well-written and informative; I've found out about more bands through this mag than any other I've read. Much more professional than its American counterparts (Metal Edge, Circus, etc). Covers all sorts of metal/rock bands, from Linkin Park to Slayer. This is a British weekly magazine- not a monthly- so the cost is high but well worth it if you can afford it.

I was compelled to write a review after I received my new copy of the Missouri Review (MR) a few weeks ago. Before I get into MR, I just wanted to say that they've recently changed the design of their journal for the better. They've always had a fairly nice design, but the new MR is slightly larger with excellent cover art (so you'll want to display it on your coffee table) and some nice art illuminating the insides as well. (as well as their usual goofy cartoons which are never as good as the New Yorker's but can occasionally be side-splittingly funny).If you are unfamiliar with journals, you might think that The MR is a magazine about Missouri. This is not the case. The MR is a showcase for talented writers in a variety of fields from all across the US (and sometimes international authors as well). It is only called the Missouri Review because it is sponsored by the University of Missouri.MR usually includes a number of well-crafted short stories, thought-provoking essays, poetry and interviews. In the most recent edition, they had fiction by Paul Eggers (no relation to David Eggers) and Steve Almond of "My Life in Heavy Metal" fame.It also includes nonfiction: most recently an essay by Jeffrey Hammond on joining the now-politically incorrect "Indian Guides" an alternate to boy scouts, in the 1950's, and an essay composed of memories of rural life and how it creates a more immediate connection with food by Jeremy Jackson.The latest issue also featured an interview with Jon Stewart (of comedy central fame) and fellow writers who contributed to America (The Book)The MR often features a nod to literary giants. For example, previous issues have included the letters of Robert Lowell and unpublished short stories of William Gaddis.If you enjoy reading, if you enjoy variety: a very nice mix literary traditional and contemporary smart/ hip writing, it would probably be worth your time to subscribe to Missouri Review. Leave it out on your coffee table.

Show me the good stuff

I haven't subscribed to enough literary journals to be positive, but based on what I've seen, they seem to come in two shapes and sizes: either they try to compete with top-drawer current event magazines such as Harpers' and The Atlantic, or else they concentrate on short fiction, short non-fiction, and poetry. While there's nothing wrong with either one, I already subscribe to other current event magazines, and adding one more would be a waste of resources. One the other hand, journals such as The Missouri Review, which focus on literary concerns as opposed to overwrought hand wringing and sensational analysis, have the potential to inspire and surprise.Inside any typical issue of The Missouri Review you'll find:-Fiction-Essays - generally memoir or personal reflection,-An interview with a successful writer or poet,-Poetry liberally sprinkled throughout the magazine,-A critical, connected review of several books,-And an occasional special feature.The quality of the 'Review' is consistent - not every effort is five-star, but they are entertaining and hold my interest. However, the idea of a 'literary journal' may discourage some people - they may suspect that the stories are experimental or open-ended. Personally, I've felt that they are very accessible - these are story stories, not avant-garde nonsense. The editors of The Best American Short Stories 2008 even picked the story 'Man and Wife' from the 'Review' for that distinguished anthology. I wouldn't be surprised to see "Loeka Discovered" by Seth Fried from the winter 2008 issue short-listed for the next one.These literary journals are the last bastions of new short fiction and poetry. If you care about such things, then it isn't so much as one's better than the other, but that you lend your support to whichever you like best. 'The Missouri Review' is certainly a quality magazine, eye-catching and sturdy as a trade paperback, suitable for shelving or coffee tabling; but regardless of aesthetics, in tough economic times it can be hard to justify the expense. While I enjoy the fiction and the memoir, I skimp through the poetry and rarely read past the intro to the interview. Not that either is mis-handled, but my interests lay elsewhere. That leaves a good chunk of the magazine unread, and I have to decide if the remaining portion is worth the cost.Economics will drive my decision, but there is a better than average chance I'll subscribe again. If you enjoy new short fiction and poetry, then 'The Missouri Review' is a more than adequate place to get your recommended daily allowance.

UK-based, but Universal in Appeal

If you don't live in the UK, you'll often find a lot of music and bands you've never heard of in Total Guitar, but that's a good thing. As an alternative to Guitar for the Practicing Musician and Guitar World, which mostly feature the same transcriptions and cover artists you're already tired of ad naseum (and usually only focusing on a certain type of band for two years straight), TG, on the otherhand, is a breath of fresh air EVERY SINGLE MONTH. They may have a pop artist on the cover one month, a country legend another, a heavy artist the next, a funk or punk artist the following. In each issue, you can find a diverse palette of music to choose from - with transcriptions and faithfully recorded instrumental tracks on CD for you to play along with and learn from (just like having a band right there with you), along with very helpful tips for the novice and experienced player alike. You're bound to find something new to pique your interest every time. Their only downfall is that they have an Oasis fixation that will hopefully come to pass, but this IS a UK magazine, you know? This is the type of magazine where you can find transcriptions of bands such as the Pixies alongside The Smiths, Blur, Van Halen, Elvis, James Bond, Metallica, and tons more. Guitar Player and Guitar World just don't match up. So you may be scared off by the pricetag of Total Guitar. I believe it's worth every penny. If you're just starting out, TG is like an invaluable set of FUN lessons sent to your door (or at your newsstand) each month, and if you already play, TG offers a wealth of tips and information to help you stay on your toes. Again, you're not only getting an action-packed magazine, but also a cool CD to play along with each month, and they have to import it from England, so that's where the price is coming from. Completely worth it, though. If you're like me and don't really care to see the 10th Korn transcription in Guitar Magazine in 3 months, then Total Guitar is definitely worth you checking out.

I learned to play near to accuracy the likes of Eric Clapton, George Harrison,Jimi Hendrix,Van Halen, Queen, Free, Bad Company, Jimmy Page, Hank Marvin,Dire Straits, SRV, Richie Blackmore, Black Sabbath, Johnny Winter etc. All the tricks were let out of the bag.

TOP NOTCH TEACHERSThe publisher Future Publication employs top notch guitarists as editors and teachers to share all the secrets with us. And the best of all, you do not need to understand music theory. All you need is some basic skill in understanding guitar tabs, a great love in guitar, a DVD player that has A-B setting & lots and lots of patience. This is the type ogf magazine that along with Mojo make all others pale in comparison.Record Collector gives such brilliant reviews of albums,run downs on the entire output sand releases of bands.It truly gets you excited about music and wanting if not lusting to hear so many of the albums that they review.They look at all musical styles and thi slack of bias should be a great hook for all music lovers.The articles which are the main ones concentrate solely on one act,and will if necessary take it through four or five issues to give an accurate account of the band's history,musical output,members,what they are doing now,how they formed etc etc.This is a truly indispensable magazine.I have no complaints but for the fact i cannot afford to buy it,and find it hard to track down in the U.S.A.Also if you begin collecting your house will be overun quickly as throwing out one of these magazines feel slike tearing out a piece of your soul.

Subscriber since 1st issue. 4 to 1 star Update: Shonen Jump Alpha!

Update: Shonen Jump is ending next year, and unless you want to subscribe to the online release of Shonen Jump Alpha, don't subscribe to this.Update: Just realized my June issue is a June/July issue....great. I guess my beloved magazine is slowly dying. :(I remember seeing the first issue of Shonen Jump on newstands in 2003 and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I was around 12 or 13 then, and I still love it as a 21-year old. It has always been a great value considering that the average volume of manga is around ten dollars or more.Also, I used to be a yugioh fan, and Shonen Jump provided me with a countless amount of awesome free promo cards. Having read every issue, I've seen Shonen Jump go through every phase. While I understand that the economy may cause Viz to have to make certain changes, they are still negative changes and I'll list them here:First off, Shonen Jump had the magazine, and then they began publishing the manga that ran in their magazine in their Shonen Jump Graphic Novel line. Well, that is fine. The problem is, they began to remove series from their magazine in mid-story. It would say, Hikaru No Go is "graduating" to thier Shonen Jump Graphic Novel line, and lucky you, you can now read it faster! Hooray!!! I got to read it for free, now I have to go to the effort of hunting it down, then paying around a hundred dollars or so for the rest of the series.I get that certain series are more popular than other series, but it has happened many times, and the only series that have finished are Sandland(very short series) and Yu Yu Hakusho.Recently they were really pushing a manga called Ultimo, which is co-made by Stan Lee. They treated it as their flagship exclusive manga, but once again removed.That move definitely suprised even me after all the hype. Dragonball Z, Shaman King, Hikaru No Go,Gin Tama,Yugioh GX, Tegami Bachi, and Ultimo, are all victims of "graduation" I can think of off the top of my head.They also do speed-ups where they skip chunks of story to catch up with manga in Japan. Makes sense, so not that big of a deal there.Secondly,the magazine seems to have gotten a little thinner in the past year. Those are my only gripes with the actual magazine itself.My main gripe with Shonen Jump is that recently they are clearly now trying to give a priority to newstand buyers over subscribers which is an unforgivable, greedy, and disgusting act. Shonen Jump has always advertised the subscription as "get it before newstands". As a subscriber, I always have. VERY early. That is until the most recent year. Now, while I'm waiting, I go to Wal-mart, FYE,and Waldenbooks, and have to stare at a brand new issue, that I as a subscriber have to wait for.The customer service used to be good, but has definitely suffered. If I ever miss an issue, I never have a problem. What I dislike now is that the c.s. operator now tries to give the runaround by giving you corporate answers, and doesn't want to listen to your problem.Don't get me wrong, I still love Shonen Jump. I just hate to see something I love degrade in quality little by little. Please don't forget your core subscribers Shonen Jump.

DO NOT BUY THROUGH AMAZON

In the past, I have gotten this mag for my son and purchased through the publisher directly. it was great.I bought it this year (DEC 1) through amazon and it is now almost March and still have not recieved an issue. If you want to buy this do it directly, NOT through here. Unless of course you want to wait half a year for the subscription to start...Here is the info they provided me on the shipping of the mag."If you want a subscription to be a Christmas present, you will need to place your order at the beginning of October or first week of November to ensure delivery by January 1st. The reason is that most publishers do not print a magazine in December or January. They actually print these issues in advance of the holiday season. Any orders made in late November, December or January are processed for the first available issue of the next year. In this particular case, that issue was the April'10 issue. This issue was created in January and February, printed in late February and then shipped. It ships out from the printer's office to a distributor, it is then labeled and shipped to customers. So as you can see, the start of a subscription is dependent on the publisher's print schedule, distribution/labeling process, and availability of issues.Thank you, [...] Vulcan Service/Magazine Express"they do not have the speedy service that amazon usually offers...

These monthly books I receive are everything I wanted. They publish chapters of different manga with news of video games and anime. I would assume that the chapters are edited to be more appropriate for teenagers. I looked up one of the manga online that was being published in the magazine and there were a whole bunch of words changed up. Some panels were also removed. I'm not sure if it ruins the original story but I don't notice anything negative about it.It gets confusing if you hope in reading the manga for the first time when you have no idea of what's going on in the story plot. Even though there are summaries in the beginning of each chapter about what happened in previous chapters and a few character profiles with small descriptions, it still can be difficult to understand. It took me a few reads throughout the entire magazines and some research online to get everything straight.Overall, I am very pleased with subscribing for this magazine. I've been introduced to manga that I've never seen or heard about before that I enjoy reading.
