A Great Bass Player's Resource

Bass Player features successful bass players every month. The subject matter is wide ranging. Towards the front of the magazine, there is a new gear section that gives a short description and thumbnail picture of new products such as effects pedals, speaker cabinets, strings, and what have you. Usually the magazine cover shot will be the main story where the magazine will give background information on a bass player and then interview him/her. One month you might find Paul McCartney, the next, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. In the interview, the reader gets insight into the mind of working successful musicians and how they shape musical bass standards with their vision. Towards the back of the magazine, there are in-depth reviews of three or four pieces of musical equipment; always included are a bass guitar, often a bass amp, and speakers, strings, and pedals.

As you get further to the back, there are many lessons geared towards teaching the aspiring bass player how to do certain techniques they might have heard on a recording, as well as technical exercises to improve technique. One month, you may have a guest columnist teaching you about how to hold your hand over the fretboard on an upright, and the next, you may get lessons on how to keep better tempo with the drummer. This section is very valuable and pertinent to anyone aspiring to improve their playing style. Peppered throughout the magazine are ads from all the industry manufacturers and retailers advertising a broad spectrum of supplies available, as well as internet links to those products. These ads themselves are educational as they give the musician a chance to compare product specifications and pricing. If I had any requests from this magazine, it would be--how about a small humor section or a cartoon?

This magazine is a must-have for both the seasoned professional and the aspiring newbie. I never miss an issue and I learn something every time I read a new Bass Player. I always look forward to the next issue with great enthusiasm. Do yourself a favor and subscribe to this one today! :-)

I have grown up on this mag!!!

If you are a bassist and you even need to read a review to figure out if this is the right mag for you, best get your head checked! I have subscribed to Bass Player since 1992 and will keep renewing my subcription until I am so old I have to have my assistant read me all the features by my craftmatic lounger. Forget Fox news, Bass Player is fair and balanced, covering everyone from the sad passing of NHOP (greatest upright player of all time) to all the standards like Jaco and Vic. Dont think that you little mall-core kids are not rep'd...all the nu-metal low enders are there as well, even though they suck the rust from under my fretwire. I have always respected this magazine and the writers seem like family...go get this now fool! word.

I ordered this mag in January and here it is, April, and I still haven't received the first issue. I have been on the phone with Synapse and they told me TWICE that they would get back to me with info on my subscription within 24 hours and I still haven't heard from them. The mag is great but the subscription service seems far below Amazon's usual service.

Got my "Mojo" workin'

Music, music, music. That's what "Mojo" is about, and ALL it's about. If you're looking for info on pop stars' latest paramours, or rants about the government, look elsewhere. This magazine is a sleek, polished, well-informed music magazine that focuses on the core of what people listen to.

"Mojo" covers all the bases with information about rock (present and classic), country, R&B, alternative, punk, and a speckling of other types. In-depth, professional articles -- at least one big one, and a number of smaller ones, interviews and analysis alike. Not to mention, of course, the wealth of reviews and concert reports.

Unlike many music magazines, "Mojo" focuses both on the past and present. Present: Norah Jones, Outkast, Ryan Adams, Flaming Lips, Strokes and David Bowie. Past: Led Zeppelin, Elvis, Ramones, the Beatles (naturally!), Pink Floyd, Nirvana, and so forth. They also take a hard look at up-and-coming new bands and performers, without letting hype get in the way. They balance out respect for rock's illustrious past, while acknowledging the worth of new bands and music.

As an extra bonus, nearly every issue of "Mojo" comes with a CD firmly attached to it. For example, one was a collection of classic blues songs that have since been covered by everybody from Jimi Hendrix to Aerosmith to the White Stripes. It's the icing on a cake that is already sweet on its own.

"Mojo" is music-lover's Bible. One thing it isn't: it's not people who love trends and celebrity. It's a solid, ultra-informative collection of info about every kind of good music under the sun. A winner.

High Ticket Price Is Justified!

If you are a fan of a certain genre of music,be it mainstream pop, punk or hip-hop, there are at least a few magazines to cater to your taste. The rarity is a magazine that caters to the all-around pop music fanatic, and Mojo Magazine tops that obscure list.This is a pricey publication, but well worth the money. Since discovering the magazine several years ago, I have been amazed at the diversity in the cover features alone: The Beatles, ABBA, Frank Zappa, Kate Bush, The White Stripes, Michael Jackson, Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols, Madonna... there is something for everybody's taste, and plenty for people with a wide range of musical taste.Cover features inside, I am always amazed at the space they give to performers and/or bands that have a small cult following. I especially enjoyed the piece they did on The Incredible String Band several years back. As they usually do when covering a group's history, the Mojo writers do not shy away from the friction and low points involved in the band's career. No tabloid trash-talking or finger pointing, just good solid journalism; showing the strengths that makes an icon's popularity endure, and the bumps in the road that ended the ride.The reviews of CDs are plenty, and I often find myself discovering something new to add to my collection. You'll find reviews of pop, punk, folk, blues, country, classic rock, you name it! I also find the reviewers to be a lot more open minded when reviewing albums, which is a welcome holiday from the plethora of snobbish music critics who go out of their way to trash good efforts.Mojo, in my humble opinion, is top of the music mags. If you are an over all pop-culture fan like I am, and are always on the lookout for something new to add to your collection, then Mojo Magazine should be a key resource in your database!

Best Music Mag Ever

Hands down, Mojo is the most well-written, informed magazine concerning popular (not pop) music published today; covering rock & roll, rhythm & blues, country...I'm talking the vintage stuff. A fat wealth of information without the pandering BS and hype contained in nearly ALL comparable U.S. publications. Reviews are well-informed and referenced, interviews and articles are well-researched and do not insult the intelligence of either the reader or the subject. Ever wanna' know what went on in the studio with Alex Chilton and The Replacements? Did Johnny Cash really set a mountain on fire? Mojo usually does a couple of massive feature articles on popular and/or influential bands of the past,plus short interviews with personalities (ever wonder what Tony Blair listens to when he gets up in the morning?), a few hundred record and concert reviews, new releases, UK club dates. Makes Rolling Stone and SPIN look like the TeenBeat rags they truly are. Well worth the price. The only thing the US produces that comes close is MAGNET.

Bi-monthly GAMES Pencilwise

This bi-monthly GAMES Magazine spin-off offers sixty-plus pages of 'crosswords, word searches, picture puzzles, cryptograms, trivia, logic, double-crostics, cryptics and other pencil puzzles' reminiscent of GAMES' signature Pencilwise section. Most puzzles are rated on the standard one-to-three star scale of difficulty. The center of each issue contains a ten-page 'special section' of related puzzles. Each issue also features a contest with a $500 grand prize (and famed GAMES T-shirts for lucky random runner-ups). These puzzles are better crafted than those of the cheaper Dell or Penny Press competing publications and at $3.25 an issue this still offers good value. I enjoy the crosswords and double-crostics best.Over my year-long subscription I accumulated a backlog of unread issues and eventually decided to cancel my 'World Of Puzzles' subscription. I'm saving the unused issues for future use. Single issues are highly recommended for airport bookstores and long airplane or train travel.Amazon's annual rate is currently about $3.50 less than that directly offered by the publishers (each issue is loaded with subscription cards). However, be advised that subscribing through Amazon takes a LONG time to start (Amazon currently estimates 3-4 months between payment and first issue).

Best puzzle magazine I've found

This magazine is on the pricey side, but it is packed full of really clever puzzles -- of all kinds. There are the staples: crosswords, paint by numbers, cryptoquotes, battleships -- but also all kinds of original, unique puzzles as well. You get what you pay for with this magazine. It keeps me entertained for many days (and nights). I save the old ones and go back to find a little nugget of a puzzle that I hadn't finished when I first looked at it. Great magazine -- so glad it is on the market.

Best puzzle magazine out there

I have tried the basic crossword and logic puzzle magazines out there, the kind you get at the airport and so on (usually by Penny Press), and the Games Magazine publications, World of Puzzles in particular, are by far the best. The simple physical quality of them is better, the puzzles more interesting and just overall a better buy. I admit I have never finished all the puzzles in it, but it's also great because I can keep them a while and still find puzzles to do! If you do a lot of puzzles, get a subscription. If you're more limited on time and never finish as many of them as you like, you can generally find this at places like Borders and buy every other edition.

Life is Too Short, That's Why You Need Star.

Star is definitely way up there on my list of guilty pleasures. In my opinion, of the celebrity magazines it has the best photos, the best reporters and tattlers, it's always easy to read and with its new slick format, it is totally irresistable. And they always come up some clever columns or series. Like for a minute, it was Joan Rivers and her daughter on the Fashion Police Beat. Now, it's "Normal or Not Normal". As the paparazzo catch the Beautiful Ones doing seemingly everyday things the Star Editors have fun with whether this is normal behavior with a hilarious rating system. Anyway, I stack it right along with my weekly journal and magazine reading. To me it's a fun publication.

Glossy and Enjoyable

I have been a faithful Star reader for the past few years and sometimes their stories are right on the money. Now that Star is glossy, they really try to give Us Weekly a run for their money. I love the new glossy star, but don't like the higher price tag, so if you can afford a subscription it's worth it. They tend to cover the usual suspects as far as celebrities, and rarely do they cover human interests stories that don't have to deal with tinseltown, but if you want to read about -Kirstie Alley, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, The Olsen Twins, and the usual suspects you will enjoy this mag.

This is my bible.

First, I would like to say to the person who reviewed before me that you shouldn't rate the product low b/c you haven't recieved it yet because now AP has a 2 star average.Anyway, I love this magazine. It offers a plethora of articles about your favorite bands and ones you may have never heard of. Thanks to this magazine, I discovered some of my favorte bands of all time (The Matches, The Pink Spiders, etc.). There are also atricles about unsigned bands, fashion (although it's usually only a page long), and the history of music, among other things. I often read issues cover to cover. Overall, an enthralling read everytime. Basically, if you love alternative music, you need to get this magazine. Otherwise, you're missing out.

Monthly Dose of Awesome

It brightens my day whenever I see an AP sitting in muh mailbox. I agree that you shouldn't give a bad review just becasue a product hasn't come in yet. Don't let the 2 star reviews fool you, AP is just about the greatest printed source there is for music. I discovered almost every band on my mp3 player from this magazine. But I will say, if you're not into really AMAZING music, stick with your local radio station and order a subscription of J14. :P

Delivery Delay, But well worth it

I would like to start off by commenting on why this magazine subscription has such a low rating. Almost all magazine subscriptions I have purchased through Amazon take a few months to start receiving. It took about 4-5 months for me to get my first issue of Alt Press. Expect that delay. For the very low magazine prices on Amazon, I think its worth it. This is a very good magazine for those that enjoy Alternative Rock music. One of my favorite features of the magazine is the up and coming album release schedule it gives you in the first few pages.

Indispensible resource for readers of all genres and ages

(****1/2) Bookmarks (A Reader's Guide to the Best in Books) is the newest magazine for bibliophiles in the market. Since its preview/debut issue in Summer 2002, Bookmarks has released 10 issues featuring a mixed bag of classics and contemporary authors like Steinbeck, Dickens, Garcia Marquez, Virginia Woolf, Waugh, Austen, Morrison, Naipaul, Potok, Faulkner, Potok, Vonnegut, and Philip Roth.

The bi-monthly publication has book reviews and selections for readers of all ages. The "Book by Book" section will features a detailed coverage on works of a specific author, suggestions on introductory books to the author, a specific genre of literature, or a particular time period. The currents issue (May/June 2004) features Leo Tolstoy and Literary Voices of the Pre-Civil Rights Era, with a look at classic works by Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, and James Baldwin.

More than half the pages of the magazine focus on navigating the ever-expanding sea of reading: new books, now-in-paperback books, and reader-favorite recommendations. This is by far the most useful and timesaving resource for me to search for my next reading selection. The "Selections" allows me to preview staff favorites from among the most highly rated books in an issue (usually 4 stars and above).

The "New Book Guide" features book reviews separated into genres like spot, literary fiction, crime, sci-fi, general non-fiction, biography, history, science, and arts. It is therefore structured to find easily the information about a particular book most appealing and relevant to me. Each book featured in this section has a critical summary. The books covered fall into three basic categories: highly rated books that received many reviews, highly rated books that received less comprehensive coverage, and lower rated books that were widely reviewed and well-publicized. That way general popularity of the books, as well as the collective but disparaging critics may be accommodated. Highly rated books maybe balanced with the less publicized or lower-rated books. After all, it is frustrating to apply ratings to any works of literary arts in the absence of myriad choices. To accommodate such need, supplemental reading is provided.

Bookmarks strives to accommodate palates readers of all ages and genres. In any given issue readers will find, in addition to the new releases and talk-of-the-town books that perch on bestseller list, works of classics. I find the inclusion on works of classics and their authors very appealing to me. Bookmarks has simply topped my favorite periodical list for the year and become my reading companion.

You know that expression "so many books, so little time"? After reading a few issues of "Bookmarks" you will be exposed to so many wonderful books and authors that you will be chanting this as a mantra. It is obvious from the first page of this bimonthly magazine that the editors love books as much as their readers do. It provides balanced coverage of books by bringing together reviews from many other publications, giving you the opportunity to see comments from glowing to scathing so that you can decide for yourself whether a book is worth reading. There are many innovative regular features: "What One Book" takes a topic such as yoga or jazz and asks the experts to suggest books about it; "If..." poses a hypothetical situation and then provides reading suggestions; "Have you read?" provides recommendations by readers. Every issue highlights a veteran author and provides an overview on their writing career and a bibliography. If you only want to subscribe to one magazine for bibliophiles, this should be it!

I enjoy reading about books almost as much as I enjoy actually reading the books themselves. The hunt is everything. I totally savor the acts of studying and evaluating and planning for my next read. This magazine enhances the experience. It talks about new books, classic books, categories of books, book ratings, editorial book reviews - all at great length. There are, what seems like, zillions of reviews that give you enough information to know whether or not you should take a closer look.This is the best book review source that I have found. This month they are talking about the books of Fitzgerald. Can't wait to dive in!!

Do you love a good historical romance or a bit of science fiction? Romantic Times Book Reviews is a dream magazine for the book lover or reviewer. Whether you are looking for a book on romance, mystery, the paranormal, erotica, inspiration, urban fantasy, or science fiction, you will find it here. As a dedicated bibliophile, I look forward to each monthly edition with it's wide array of articles, and reviews of the latest upcoming books. Editions are about 135 pages of wall to wall reading and browsing. It doesn't get any better than that!

For me, it's essential!

If there's too many books and just not enough time, this magazine is definitely for you! I look forward to every issue for updates about favorite authors and information detailed enough to help me make selections on purchases before they hit the shops. I frequently go directly from RT to Amazon with my selections for the month.It's like having the luxury of an in-depth menu before ordering a fabulous meal. I love it, can't do without it, and would definitely recommend it to a friend!

Its good, despite the cheese-whiz covers

I read romantic times magazines for the plot synopsis and reviews of upcoming titles. Part of me wishes the editors would focus more on romance and less on general fiction and other subjects (I have no interest in children's books or articles about cover models).I don't usually agree with the reviewers ratings for books. I think I have different taste, but I do enjoy reading them anyway. Sometimes the covers are poor or uninspired. They could use a re-design.4 stars.
